David Niyonzima

I am coordinator of Trauma, Healing, and Reconciliation Services in the African country of Burundi. We do psychosocial intervention and promote healing and rehabilitation for traumatized people (ex-combatants and others affected by wars, and victims of torture and sexual violence). Since 2004 I've been part-time instructor of counseling courses at Hope Africa University, Bujumbura, Burundi.

I was born in Gotega, Burundi, on February 16, 1959, eighth son of Mark Bikomagu (died 1994) and Helen Buberwa (died 2001). My parents were among the first Burundi Quakers (Quakerism got into Burundi in 1934). I married Felicity Ntikurako on May 4, 1988, and we have four children: Daniella, 16; Elie, 14; James, 12; and Anna, 7. I'm a graduate of Kenya Highlands Bible College and I have a master's degree from George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon. George Fox University Center for Peace Learning awarded me their John Woolman Peace Award in 2000.
